What is pixel pitch and why does it matter?

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between the center of one LED pixel and the center of the next. Smaller pixel pitch means higher resolution and sharper images at close range, but costs more per square foot. Larger pixel pitch is more cost-effective for audiences viewing from farther away. The rule of thumb: minimum comfortable viewing distance in meters equals the pixel pitch in millimeters (e.g., 2.8mm pitch → ~2.8m or ~9 ft minimum viewing distance).

How do I calculate how many LED panels I need?

Divide your wall width and height by the cabinet dimensions. Our LightKing RDY 2.8mm uses 500×500mm cabinets (~1.64×1.64 ft). Our Absen X5 5.2mm uses 500×562.5mm cabinets (~1.64×1.85 ft) — note these are not square. For a 16×9 ft wall with LightKing: 10 panels wide × 6 high = 60 panels. With Absen X5: 10 wide × 5 high = 50 panels (the taller cabinet means fewer rows). Our calculator handles this automatically and shows the actual built dimensions.

How much power does an LED wall need?

Power draw depends on wall size, panel type, and brightness level. Our LightKing RDY 2.8mm draws 150W max (50W average) per 500×500mm cabinet — that's 600W/m² peak, 200W/m² typical. Our Absen X5 5.2mm draws 156W max (52W average) per 500×562.5mm cabinet — 555W/m² peak, 185W/m² typical. A 16×9 ft indoor wall with 60 LightKing panels draws up to 9 kW peak (3 kW average). Plan for dedicated 208V/20A circuits — each supports approximately 3,300W usable.

What is the difference between indoor and outdoor LED panels?

Our LightKing RDY 2.8mm indoor panels have fine pixel pitch for sharp images at close range, 900 nits brightness, IP30 rating, and weigh 7.8 kg (17.2 lbs) per 500×500mm cabinet. They use SMD2020 black-face LEDs and support curved configurations (-5° to +5°). Our Absen X5 5.2mm indoor/outdoor panels have 5,000 nits brightness for daylight visibility, IP65/IP54 weather rating, and weigh 10 kg (22 lbs) per 500×562.5mm die-cast aluminum cabinet. The X5 uses SMD 3-in-1 Panda Eye LEDs.

How do I choose the right pixel pitch for my event?

Start with your closest viewing distance. Divide the distance in feet by 3 to get the maximum recommended pixel pitch in mm. Then adjust: broadcast or IMAG content benefits from finer pitch (multiply by 0.7–0.85), while slides and signage are more forgiving. If your audience is 30 ft away, base pitch is ~10mm — but for video content you'd want 7–8.5mm. Our calculator handles these adjustments automatically.

What resolution will my LED wall display?

Resolution is calculated from actual per-cabinet pixel counts, not just pitch division. Each LightKing RDY 2.8mm cabinet delivers 176×176 pixels (30,976 pixels per panel). Each Absen X5 5.2mm cabinet delivers 96×108 pixels (10,368 pixels per panel). A 16×9 ft wall with LightKing (10×6 = 60 panels): 1,760×1,056 pixels — close to 1080p. The same wall with Absen X5 (10×5 = 50 panels): 960×540 pixels. Our calculator shows exact resolution based on your cabinet grid.

Is this calculator accurate for quoting purposes?

This calculator uses verified manufacturer specifications for our two rental panels: LightKing RDY 2.8mm (500×500mm, 176×176px, 7.8kg, 150W max) and Absen X5 5.2mm (500×562.5mm, 96×108px, 10kg, 156W max). Panel counts, resolution, weight, and power are calculated from real cabinet dimensions and specs. Actual configuration may vary slightly based on mounting method and venue constraints — we confirm final specs during the quoting process.
